Once I had all the feathers out, I spread them out on a large sheet of plastic to dry. This step is crucial, as the feathers need to be completely dry before you can use them in a quilt. Otherwise, they will lose their insulating properties and won’t be able to keep you warm.
While the feathers were drying, I started to think about how I was going to assemble my quilt. I knew I wanted to use a simple grid pattern, as this would be easy to stitch together and also provide plenty of room for the feathers to lay flat.
Once the feathers were dry, I began to stuff them into the grid pattern. This process took some time, as I had to make sure each feather was properly positioned and not overlapping with others. But after a few hours of careful stuffing, I had my first duck feather quilt top!
The next step was to add a layer of batting to the top of the quilt. This would provide extra warmth and help to hold the feathers in place. I also added some extra material around the edges of the quilt to give it a finished look.
Finally, I sewed all the layers together using a heavy-duty sewing machine. This step was crucial, as it ensured that my quilt would hold together and not fall apart over time.
