“I hate to be the bearer of bad news,” my wife said, as she looked at the contents of our feather quilt, “but I think our feather quilt might have a problem.”
I looked at the quilt in question, a warm and comforting bedspread that we’d had for years. It was a gift from our grandparents, and we’d always loved the way it felt against our skin, the way it seemed to hug us in the cold winter nights.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “The quilt looks fine to me.”
“It’s not the appearance that concerns me,” she said, “it’s the feathers. They seem to be moving around by themselves.”
I laughed. “That’s impossible. The quilt is made of solid blocks of feathers, not loose ones. Besides, even if there were loose feathers, they wouldn’t be able to move around like that.”
“Well, I’m not sure what’s going on,” my wife said, “but I think we should get it checked out by a professional.”
I agreed to disagree with her, but she was so persistent that I eventually gave in. We took the quilt to a local quilting store, and the owner agreed to take a look at it for us.
“I see what you mean,” she said, as she examined the quilt. “The feathers do seem to be moving around by themselves.”
She looked at us with a thoughtful expression. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s as if the feathers are alive, or at least aware of their environment. This is definitely not normal.”
“What could be causing it?” I asked.
“I’m not sure,” she said, “but I think it might have something to do with the age of the quilt. Maybe the feathers have lost their structural integrity over time, and are now able to move around more freely.”
She shook her head. “Regardless, this is definitely not how a feather quilt should behave. I’d recommend getting it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.”
We thanked her for her help, and took the quilt back home. We decided to get it repaired, and the next day we took it to another local store that specialized in feather quilt repairs.
The owner of that store looked at the quilt with a puzzled expression. “I’ve never seen anything like this before,” she said. “The feathers do seem to be moving around by themselves.”
She examined the quilt for a while longer, then said, “The only thing I can think of is that maybe the quilting thread has become loose, and that’s what’s causing the feathers to move around. But I can’t be sure without taking the quilt apart, and that would ruin it.”
She looked at us sympathetically. “I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with this one. It’s just too strange.”
We left the store feeling defeated, and decided to look for a new feather quilt online. We found one that looked promising, and ordered it immediately. It arrived a few days later, and we were relieved to find that it didn't have the same problem as our old one. We'd never again let our old feather quilt suffer from neglect!
